3 Common causes of car accidents in the fall

Summer is almost over, but that doesn’t mean it’s safe to let your guard down while you’re on the road. For drivers, fall brings with it a fair share of risks and dangers that can increase your chances of getting into a motor vehicle accident.

To help you keep an eye out for potential problems while you’re on the road, here are three of the most common causes of car accidents during the autumn season and how you can avoid them.

  1. There are more deer crossing the road. Deer have their babies during the spring and summer months. That means there are more deer than usual crossing the road during the fall. Be sure to drive carefully during the evenings and to periodically scan the road for any movement you might see out of the corner of your eye. If you spot deer, slow your car down and don’t speed through the area.
  2. There are more kids out and about in the mornings. It’s back-to-school season, which means there are more kids walking to school in the morning and walking home in the afternoon. Be on the lookout for pedestrians at these times. Drive slowly through school areas and be prepared to stop when you’re near corners. Give yourself a little extra time to get to work in the morning, too, because of increased morning traffic.
  3. The sun is rising later and setting earlier. During the fall, days will start to get shorter. That means sun glare is more likely to catch you during your work commute. The good news is there are a few things you can do to fight back against sun glare including wearing polarized sunglasses, using your sun visor, slowing down and leaving more room between vehicles, cleaning your windshield, giving yourself more time to get to work in the morning, and following the marked lanes.
